Whey vs plant-based: the real difference

Single-source plant proteins like pea or rice are usually low in one or two essential amino acids on their own, which is why a decent plant blend combines two or more sources. If you're dairy-free, look for "pea and rice" or similar on the label, not just "plant protein."

Concentrate vs isolate vs hydrolysate

Concentrate keeps more of the fat, carbs and lactose from the milk it's made from, which makes it cheaper and fuller-tasting. Isolate is filtered further to strip most of that out, landing at a higher protein percentage per scoop and usually sitting easier with people sensitive to lactose. Hydrolysate is pre-broken-down for faster absorption, at a real cost premium that isn't necessary for most everyday goals.

Timing: does the "anabolic window" matter

The idea of a narrow post-workout window — protein within 30–60 minutes or the session is "wasted" — has been walked back by more recent research. Total daily protein intake, spread reasonably across the day, matters far more than hitting a specific minute mark after training.

Do you actually need a powder, or can food cover it

If you can comfortably eat enough protein-dense whole food across the day, you don't need a powder at all — it's a convenience tool, not a requirement. It tends to earn its place for people who are consistently short on time or appetite, or working toward a genuinely high target where enough whole food becomes impractical to eat every day.

What to actually check on a label

Look at protein per scoop against total calories — a reasonable ratio is roughly 20–25g of protein for around 100–140 calories — where the protein source sits in the ingredient list, and whether it's third-party tested. NSF Certified for Sport and Informed Sport are the two most recognized marks, especially relevant if you're a tested athlete or just want assurance the label matches what's in the tub.

Added sugar and artificial sweeteners: the real trade-off

Many flavored powders lean on sugar alcohols like erythritol, or non-nutritive sweeteners like sucralose or stevia, to stay low-calorie while still tasting like a milkshake. These are generally recognized as safe at normal intake, but worth knowing if you're sensitive to sugar alcohols, which can cause digestive discomfort for some people at higher amounts.

Common mistakes

Treating a scoop as a full meal replacement rather than a protein top-up, obsessing over post-workout timing instead of total daily intake, and buying on flavor alone without checking the protein-per-calorie ratio are the three most common gaps.

Who should be cautious

Anyone with an existing kidney condition should talk to a doctor before meaningfully increasing protein intake, since impaired kidneys can struggle to process a higher protein load. Dairy allergies and lactose intolerance are also worth checking against the specific product — isolate is usually better tolerated than concentrate, but neither is guaranteed lactose-free unless labeled as such.

What to expect

Protein powder doesn't do anything on its own — its whole job is making an already-sensible protein target easier to hit consistently. Any muscle, recovery or satiety benefit people associate with it comes from the total protein intake it helps you reach, not from the powder itself.
